Questions & Answers from Ted Farmer.
"I think
I understand as well as anyone where you all are coming from, as I have never
completely gotten over the thought that I now sit in 'Captain Stanley's'
seat."
"As we
are a '1st Alarm' structural fire engine company, we do keep her in as good a
shape as we possibly can, so our real needs run more towards minor
modifications and improvements more than maintenance and upkeep. I do need to
open up, inspect, and re-coat the water tank we had installed about 6 years ago.
The old original was rotting/rusting out, and had a significant (2" or
more, in places) layer of salt-water barnacles inside!"
"We
recently added two exterior flood light masts, and are very likely going to add
a low profile onboard monitor or 'deck gun' behind the 1" hose reel. We
may also possibly plumpa 2 1/2" discharge in the rear, and add SCBA
seatback mounts if we can find suitable ones. The hose reel is actually no
longer useful for firefighting by local fire code standards, as it does not
give us an acceptable volume of water. Although it has been discussed, and it
would free up some very valuable space, we are extremely reluctant to remove it
in deference to maintaining the Engine's historical appearance; I don't see
this happening, but... I must put safety and operational concerns above all
others, in the end."
"True
fans will notice other minor modifications since the series stopped filming,
such as removal of the 'Scott' SCBA mounts in the back seat areas, and the
legally required upgraded light bar on top. Aside from the light bar, Los
Angeles County Fire made most of the changes before we acquired her."
"I hope
to remain in touch and assure all of you that 'Engine 51' is alive and well,
and very much cared for and about by those of us lucky enough to have found our
way onboard."
